An Alternative to Static Climatologies: Robust Estimation of Open Ocean CO2 Variables and Nutrient Concentrations From T, S, and O-2 Data Using Bayesian Neural Networks ArchiMer
Bittig, Henry C.; Steinhoff, Tobias; Claustre, Harve; Fiedler, Bjoern; Williams, Nancy L.; Sauzede, Raphaelle; Koertzinger, Arne; Gattuso, Jean-pierre.
This work presents two new methods to estimate oceanic alkalinity (A(T)), dissolved inorganic carbon (C-T), pH, and pCO(2) from temperature, salinity, oxygen, and geolocation data. "CANYON-B" is a Bayesian neural network mapping that accurately reproduces GLODAPv2 bottle data and the biogeochemical relations contained therein. "CONTENT" combines and refines the four carbonate system variables to be consistent with carbonate chemistry. Both methods come with a robust uncertainty estimate that incorporates information from the local conditions. They are validated against independent GO-SHIP bottle and sensor data, and compare favorably to other state-of-the-art mapping methods. As "dynamic climatologies" they show comparable performance to classical...

Artificial neural network analysis of factors controlling ecosystem metabolism in coastal systems ArchiMer
Rochelle-newall, Emma. J.; Winter, Christian; Barrón, Cristina; Borges, Alberto V.; Duarte, Carlos M.; Elliott, Mike; Frankignoulle, Michel; Gazeau, Frederic; Middelburg, Jack J.; Pizay, Marie-dominique; Gattuso, Jean-pierre.
Knowing the metabolic balance of an ecosystem is of utmost importance in determining whether the system is a net source or net sink of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. However, obtaining these estimates often demands significant amounts of time and manpower. Here we present a simplified way to obtain an estimation of ecosystem metabolism. We used artificial neural networks (ANNs) to develop a mathematical model of the gross primary production to community respiration ratio (GPP:CR) based on input variables derived from three widely contrasting European coastal ecosystems (Scheldt Estuary, Randers Fjord, and Bay of Palma). Although very large gradients of nutrient concentration, light penetration, and organic-matter concentration exist across the sites,...

Comparison of Mediterranean Pteropod Shell Biometrics and Ultrastructure from Historical (1910 and 1921) and Present Day (2012) Samples Provides Baseline for Monitoring Effects of Global Change ArchiMer
Howes, Ella L.; Eagle, Robert A.; Gattuso, Jean-pierre; Bijma, Jelle.
Anthropogenic carbon perturbation has caused decreases in seawater pH and increases in global temperatures since the start of the 20th century. The subsequent lowering of the saturation state of CaCO3 may make the secretion of skeletons more problematic for marine calcifiers. As organisms that precipitate thin aragonite shells, thecosome pteropods have been identified as being particularly vulnerable to climate change effects. Coupled with their global distribution, this makes them ideal for use as sentinel organisms. Recent studies have highlighted shell dissolution as a potential indicator of ocean acidification; however, this metric is not applicable for monitoring pH changes in supersaturated basins. In this study, the novel approach of high resolution...

Estimates of Water-Column Nutrient Concentrations and Carbonate System Parameters in the Global Ocean: A Novel Approach Based on Neural Networks ArchiMer
Sauzede, Raphaelle; Claustre, Hervé; Bittig, Henry; Pasqueron De Fommervault, Orens; Gattuso, Jean-pierre; Legendre, Louis; Johnson, Kenneth S.
A neural network-based method (CANYON: CArbonate system and Nutrients concentration from hYdrological properties and Oxygen using a Neural-network) was developed to estimate water-column biogeochemically relevant variables in the Global Ocean. These are the concentrations of 3 nutrients [nitrate (NO3−), phosphate (PO43−) and silicate (Si(OH)4)] and 4 carbonate system parameters [total alkalinity (AT), dissolved inorganic carbon (CT), pH (pHT) and partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2)], which are estimated from concurrent in situ measurements of temperature, salinity, hydrostatic pressure and oxygen (O2) together with sampling latitude, longitude and date. Seven neural-networks were developed using the GLODAPv2 database, which is largely representative of the...

Near-future ocean warming and acidification alter foraging behaviour, locomotion, and metabolic rate in a keystone marine mollusc ArchiMer
Horwitz, Rael; Norin, Tommy; Watson, Sue-ann; Pistevos, Jennifer C. A.; Beldade, Ricardo; Hacquart, Simon; Gattuso, Jean-pierre; Rodolfo-metalpa, Riccardo; Vidal-dupiol, Jeremie; Killen, Shaun S.; Mills, Suzanne C..
Environmentally-induced changes in fitness are mediated by direct effects on physiology and behaviour, which are tightly linked. We investigated how predicted ocean warming (OW) and acidification (OA) affect key ecological behaviours (locomotion speed and foraging success) and metabolic rate of a keystone marine mollusc, the sea hare Stylocheilus striatus, a specialist grazer of the toxic cyanobacterium Lyngbya majuscula. We acclimated sea hares to OW and/or OA across three developmental stages (metamorphic, juvenile, and adult) or as adults only, and compare these to sea hares maintained under current-day conditions. Generally, locomotion speed and time to locate food were reduced ~1.5- to 2-fold when the stressors (OW or OA) were experienced in...

Oxygen production and carbon fixation in oligotrophic coastal bays and the relationship with gross and net primary production ArchiMer
Gonzalez, Natalia; Gattuso, Jean-pierre; Middelburg, Jack J..
Planktonic primary production and respiration in 2 coastal oligotrophic sites of the Northwest Mediterranean Sea were examined. Primary production was quantified using 3 methods (light and dark changes in dissolved O-2, O-18-labeling and C-14 uptake technique) using in situ bottle incubations. Gross primary production (GPP) based on the O-2 light-dark technique was not significantly different from that using the O-18-labeling technique, indicating that the former technique provides accurate estimates of GPP in these environments. Respiration in the dark was not significantly different frorn respiration in the light. Total C-14 uptake (including the dissolved and particulate organic carbon fractions) during the whole duration of the light period approached...
